Construction of our school building began in 1996 by Mitchell Construction Company of Riverdale, Georgia. The building was not complete when school started in August, so our students attended Pointe South Middle School, Riverdale Middle School and Mundy's Mill Middle School. The special needs department was housed at Adamson Middle School and Lovejoy Middle School. Our teachers had a grey Rubbermaid cart for all their classroom supplies and they traveled from classroom to classroom throughout the school day. The building was complete in November and we moved in over the Thanksgiving holiday.

- Students were bused in for tours on November 18 (6th & 7th grade) and November 19 (8th grade and special education).
- Open House was held on November 20, 1996.
- The first school day at KMS was November 21, 1996, with 850 students.
- The first printed newsletter (4 pages) was sent home on October 9, 1996.
- Since we had no football field, the first season was played at Tara Stadium. The first touchdown was made by Cameron Essex in a game against Adamson, which we lost 26-8. The first win was the last game of the season on October 16. We beat Morrow, 32-22.
- The first clubs offered were Art, Beta, Science, Sigma Lambda Chi and yearbook.
- The first WKMS news crew was formed.
- We hosted the Georgia State Media Festival in the spring of 1997, with the assistance of student volunteers.
- The first family reading event was hosted by the Media Center and Language Arts department.
- The Georgia Association of Media Assistants attended the Azalea Storytelling Festival in March of 1997.
